poissons, noir

These fish came from the first book I saw that really made me go, zomg, I need those on fabric. They’re pretty basic, to be honest, but I love them because the book itself is so over the top.

A collection of black colored fish from Louis Renard’s 1754 book of fish and sea life from the Indian Ocean, Poissons, ecrevisses et crabes, de diverses couleurs et figures extraordinaires, que l’on trouve autour des isles Moluques et sur les côtes des terres Australes: peints d’après nature.

The images used in this pattern are taken from the copy at Harvard’s Museum of Comparative Zoology, which has been digitized and placed in the public domain at the Biodiversity Heritage Library. The book in full can be seen at https://doi.org/10.5962/bhl.title.115425.

Fabric and household goods available for purchase at Spoonflower (link is to the white background; you’ll have to browse through for the others).

I got it into my head that you should have the option of these on colored backgrounds, if you wanted, and so the blue, yellow, and pink coordinate across the whole poissons series, so you can mix and match your fish.
